Bonjour, and welcome to what I hope is an eclectic mix of French content that reflects my day to day encounters with news, commentary and learning materials, mainly from a variety of francophone sources.

With the lockdown resulting from COVI-19, I have been receiving posts from Lumni on my Facebook timeline. These are presumably aimed at children who are out of school.

There are some very interesting short discussion videos. In the one selected here a paediatrician answers questions about the functioning of the body. Really quite fascinating and a pleasant way to practise your French comprehension.
Laissez bronzer les cadavres
Laissez bronzer les cadavres (☞imdb)
A brutal gold heist, a ruthless gang, a mountain hideout, a strange woman artist, other assorted people and then two gendarmes arrive. A very violent film with disturbing images.

You can find my short review in the Adult section of my cinema pages.
No need for geniuses
No Need for Geniuses (Book)
If you're interested in science and French Revolutionary history, then this is the book to read. I knew that French scientists, or philosophes as they were then called, were responsible for a great deal more than they are credited. But this book was a revelation.
New Cinema section - Adult
New Cinema category - Adult
The latest film I've watched is Le déclin de l'empire américain, which didn't really fit with my existing film categories. I've therefore created a new category, Adult.

In fact I have a number of reviews of previous films on my kilburnlad site that fit this category and which I didn't transfer to this site when I first set it up.
Frères Ennemis
Frères Ennemis (☞imdb)
A cop from the banlieue uses a childhood friend as an insider to help ensnare a drugs gang. But the plan goes terribly wrong and things become messy as retribution is sought.

Julia is an attractive lawyer and when her car runs out of fuel on the way to a party, Sami happens to be there. He gives her a lift and joins her at the party, after which they become an 'item'. But the course of true love never runs true!

The harsh reality of language learning
The Harsh Reality of Language Learning - Power Law distribution
As we progress with learning a language some things become easier, such as basic conversation, while others elude us, such as understanding French films. This article suggests that this fundamentally comes down to vocabulary and to improve from 90% comprehension to 98% your vocabulary may need to increase from around 7000 words to 45,000!

A bit of techie stuff first. I have for a while been trying to move the search facility to a toggled feature at the top of each page. With some technical assistance I have now achieved this. Go to the magnifying glass symbol to reveal the search input box.

Secondly a bit of fun. I've added some winter snow to this Bonjour page.
1905 (Film)
"1905" (☞imdb)
It's 1905 and France is coming to terms with a new law that has separated religion and the state (laïcité). Marie Dutilleul returns to her village to teach in the school. She believes implicitly in the new law while still keeping her faith, but those around her are far less understanding.
